Mr. Biava first studied conducting with Howard Halgedahl
at the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan. He continued his studies with
Gustav Meier at University of Michigan and Tanglewood, Antoni Ros Marba at the
Igualada Scola Municipal in Spain, Jorma Panula in Germany, and Michael Jinbo
at the Pierre Monteux School in Hancock, ME. His father Luis Biava, who is conductor-in-residence
of the Philadelphia Orchestra and conducting professor at Temple University, has
also coached him. Mr. Biava made the semi-final round of the National Conducting
Institute with Leonard Slatkin and the National Symphony. For the last three seasons
Mr. Biava has attended the Aspen Music Festival, in dual roles: studying conducting
with David Zinman and Murry Sidlin, and serving as principal cellist of the Aspen
Festival Academy Orchestra.
Locally Mr. Biava's has conducted the Columbus Symphony,
Upper Arlington Community Orchestra, Columbus Symphony Cadet Orchestra and Youth
Orchestra, the Opera Columbus Chorus, and the Westerville Symphony. Farther
afield he has conducted the Akron Youth Symphony, and the Orchestra Society
of Philadelphia, as well as the Festival Youth Symphony of the Americas and
the Puerto Rico Philharmonic at the Casals Festivals of 1998-2000, and the Spoleto
Festival Incontri Pomeridiani concerts. Recently he conducted two concerts of
the the National Symphony of Colombia in Bogotá and Tunja, Colombia,
and a concert of the Barranquilla Symphony and members of the Orquesta Sinfonica
de Bogotá for the President and First Lady of Colombia.
